There are many things to consider when creating a niche website.

There is a lot more to creating a niche website than choosing a domain name and slapping content on a page. A niche website must be focused around two things: passion and competition. Depending on your method of promotion, you may or may not be able to overcome the competition. Some niches are heavily saturated and do not leave room for competition, yet it is still possible to promote a website through social media and PPC when competition is fierce.

Creating a Niche Website
When considering which niche website you wish to create, keep in mind that it should have the following traits in order for it to have a chance at being successful:

  • Ability to have a plethora of topics written.
  • Allow for future growth potential.
  • Allow for a true purpose.

There are several ways to choose a niche, but for the first-time owner with no other niche websites, it is always better to choose a niche you are passionate about. This will be a niche that really holds your interest. You may even know so much about the niche that you can start writing your content immediately.

If you are having trouble gathering your niche website ideas, the following tips will help you find success:

  • Choose a niche that can be expanded. Instead choosing hot yoga, choose “yoga and health” as a broader niche to incorporate more information into your site.

If you really don’t know what niche to choose, here are a few tips:

  • Browse categories found on ClickBank.
  • Browse your favorite website for ideas.
  • Sit down and jot down some of your hobbies and passions.

The niche you choose is extremely important to your overall success online.

Defining Your Site’s Purpose
Every site needs a purpose. Much like a business plan, you need to have a general plan for your website. Before you can formulate your plan, you must first define your site’s purpose. This can be done by answering the following questions:

  • Why should visitors go to your site?
  • What do people in your niche want to know?
  • What do you want your site to provide to visitors?
  • Will your site help visitors, or leave them wanting more?

Every site needs to stand out from the crowd, and this can only be done if you have a purpose for your site.

Viewing the Competition
Everyone wants to rank highly on Google. The truth is that it is virtually impossible for a niche website to rank for some keyword phrases simply due to budget constraint. You will want to look at both your competition and how viable it is to rank for a keyword.

Competition should be analyzed by searching your site’s keyword in Google. From here, you will want to examine the site. There are two plugins that are recommended for this:

These will allow you to see how many links a site has, its overall page authority and PageRank. Keep in mind that the higher these numbers are, the more difficult it will be to rank for your desired keyword phrase.  But don’t let this sway your decision.  I have seen many websites with low PageRank score higher on a Search Engine Results Page (SERP) than sites with a better page authority.

Different keywords will have different ranking factors and competition. Ideally, you will choose keywords consisting of 2 to 3 words rather than a single word keyword. Furthermore, ranking for “hot yoga tips for beginners” would be much easier to rank for. These are longtail keywords, but they can still produce immense traffic to a site.

Maximizing Your Exposure

Niche websites have a few methods of exposure. These will include the following:

  • Connecting with others through social media.
  • Becoming an authority on niche-related forums.
  • Guest posting on niche blogs.
  • Leaving thorough comments on related blogs.
  • Posting answers on sites like Quora.
  • Submitting your posts on social booking sites, such as Reddit or Digg.

Exposure goes well beyond search engine rankings, but high rankings should be strived for at all times. Organic traffic, such as traffic through Google, is very powerful and will consist of most of the traffic to your website. After  creating a niche website, a solid SEO strategy should be formed to ensure the utmost in exposure.
