ISLAMABAD: Commuters in Islamabad will soon encounter higher travel expenses as the Capital Development Authority (CDA) has officially raised fares across all urban bus services, including electric feeder buses and Metro lines.

The new fare system establishes a standard charge of Rs100 for journeying from one stop to another on all CDA-operated routes. This adjustment affects the Orange, Green, and Blue Line Metro services, as well as electric buses that serve 17 urban routes within the capital.

Previously, fares fluctuated between Rs50 and Rs90, depending on the service chosen. Passengers traveling on the Orange Line, which connects N-5 to the Airport, will now be paying Rs100, a rise from the former Rs90. Additionally, fares for the Green Line and Blue Line have also doubled, increasing from Rs50 to Rs100.

While there were initial discussions about a potential fare hike, the CDA had dismissed such speculations. A representative had stated on May 24 that there was no plan to modify ticket prices. However, the new fare structure was implemented shortly afterward, catching many commuters off guard.

To help ease the burden of this fare increase, the CDA is set to introduce discount packages for regular passengers. The spokesperson mentioned that special travel cards would be made available for students, women, and senior citizens. These cards are expected to provide fare reductions and encourage ongoing use of public transport.

In addition to fare adjustments, the CDA is also exploring avenues to increase revenue through advertising on public buses. This initiative aims to help manage the rising operational costs associated with the transport system.

Public transport users will need to adjust to the updated fare policy, which is now applicable across all CDA-operated services in the capital. While the fare hike may strain some budgets, the authority assures that upcoming subsidies and discount cards will help provide some relief.
