AT&T has a vast network of buried cables. We get 19 million requests a year to locate our cables before someone digs a hole for a project they are working on. Ensuring that our cables remain intact is crucial to prevent service disruptions for customers including hospitals, schools, and residential homes. Meet Eric Zavesky, the recipient of the AT&T Science & Technology Medal for his “Call Before You Dig” work. By utilizing AI and machine learning, Eric and his team added automation and optimization of the process with novel data science research. This research combines geospatial recognition, natural language processing, and computer vision to help maintain uninterrupted customer service while adhering to customer friendly response standards and exacting regulatory timeline requirements.
