Apple is reportedly developing future iterations of the Apple Watch that will feature built-in cameras designed to enhance sophisticated artificial intelligence (AI) functionalities, with a projected release by 2027. According to Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, these advancements will introduce capabilities like Visual Intelligence, which will enable the watch to interpret and communicate information about the user’s environment.

In the standard models of the Apple Watch Series, the cameras are anticipated to be incorporated into the display, while the Apple Watch Ultra may include a side-mounted camera situated near the digital crown and button. This strategic placement aims to facilitate smooth interaction with the environment, allowing the device to “see” and analyze surrounding situations.

Visual Intelligence, which debuted with the iPhone 16, allows users to execute tasks such as extracting event details from a flyer and automatically adding them to their calendar, or learning about a restaurant by simply capturing an image. Currently, these capabilities depend on AI models provided by third parties; however, Apple plans to transition to its own AI systems by 2027, coinciding with the expected release of these camera-equipped devices.

Mike Rockwell, who previously led the Vision Pro project, is spearheading the push for these cutting-edge features. Under his leadership, the integration of AI functionalities across Apple’s wearable devices is anticipated to progress, which includes enhancements to Siri via upcoming updates to large language models.

Moreover, Apple is exploring the potential for similar camera and AI features in other products, such as AirPods. These efforts are part of Apple’s broader vision to create a more interconnected and intelligent ecosystem that offers users relevant and actionable insights based on their surroundings.

While these innovations promise to significantly enhance user experience, they also raise critical considerations pertaining to privacy and data security. The integration of cameras in wearable technology necessitates robust safeguards to ensure user data protection and confirm that processing practices align with Apple’s commitment to user privacy.

As the projected launch date of 2027 approaches, Apple is expected to provide additional insights regarding these developments, including specific features, privacy measures, and how these functionalities will integrate with existing Apple services and products.
