Apple TV+ and Paramount+ could be combined into a single subscription

Apple and Paramount are reportedly in talks to offer a combined subscription for Apple TV+ and Paramount+. This potential collaboration could benefit users who are interested in or already subscribed to both services.

As per a report from The Wall Street Journal (paywalled article), the two companies are in early discussions to provide their streaming services at a more affordable price. The details of the potential bundle are still unclear at this stage.

It’s uncertain whether this partnership would be limited to the U.S. or if it would be available globally, as it may be influenced by Paramount’s existing partnerships around the world. Partnerships between streaming services are not uncommon. For example, Paramount+ is part of JioCinema Premium in India, and Verizon offers bundles featuring Netflix and HBO’s Max in the U.S. Additionally, Disney+ has a bundle that includes Hulu and ESPN+ alongside its own service.

So, why are these partnerships becoming more prevalent? Reportedly, both Apple TV+ and Paramount experienced a 7% loss of subscribers in October, which was the highest defection rate in the industry. Meanwhile, the overall cost of streaming services has been rising steadily, with some increasing their prices by up to 25% over the past few years. This has made it difficult for consumers to afford multiple subscriptions, leading them to seek more affordable alternatives. For example, Apple TV+ recently increased its price from $6.99 to $9.99 per month after a $3 hike in October.

If the talks between Apple and Paramount are successful, a combined subscription could offer added value for users. Paramount+ features popular shows like Star Trek and Yellowstone, as well as live sports, while Apple TV+ has a diverse catalog including Ted Lasso and Severance, along with live sporting events. As for pricing, a potential bundle of Apple TV+ and Paramount+ Essential for $12 per month could be more attractive than purchasing both subscriptions separately for $16 per month ($192 per year), potentially saving consumers nearly $50 per year ($144).

It’s worth noting that the rising costs of individual streaming services have made them less accessible for many, leading to a desire for more affordable options. With the potential for a combined subscription, users may find relief from the burden of managing and paying for multiple standalone services.
