Apple recently introduced the ability to use Apple Maps in web browsers, expanding the service’s accessibility across different platforms.

While Apple Maps may not offer the same level of features as Google Maps, the navigation tool has improved significantly in providing a user-friendly experience. To begin, you can access Apple Maps on the web without the need to sign in to your Apple account.

You can search for specific locations using the sidebar options. The map highlights important places such as Hospitals, Train Stations, Stores, Gas Stations, Pharmacies, Restaurants, and more. Clicking on a location on the map reveals detailed information like operating hours, ratings, photos, and reviews gathered from platforms like Yelp and Zomato. You can even directly call a place or visit its website from the information card. The Directions tab in the sidebar allows you to obtain driving and walking directions from one point to another, though it does not provide step-by-step guidance. The web version also enables zooming in using the scroll-wheel on the mouse, a feature not found in the Apple Maps app on macOS.

Apple’s website mentions that the web version of Apple Maps incorporates a Guides section to help users discover interesting nearby places to explore. While voice-guided navigation is currently not available in the web version, future updates will introduce features like Look Around. Developers can integrate Maps on the web using the MapKit JS framework to offer driving directions and other functionalities.

Accessing Apple Maps on Firefox

Apple Maps is compatible with Safari and Google Chrome on Mac and iPad, as well as with Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge on Windows PCs. However, there are compatibility issues with Firefox at the moment. A workaround to use Apple Maps on Firefox is to utilize an add-on like User-Agent Switcher and Manager to set the browser agent to Chrome or Safari. Another option is to use DuckDuckGo’s Maps powered by Apple Maps. Notably, Apple Maps does not support Android devices, even when using a Chromium-based browser, and is not accessible on Safari for iOS.

Currently, Apple Maps on the web is only available in English, but support for other languages is expected soon. For alternatives, OpenStreetMap is accessible on any web browser. If you prefer privacy-focused navigation apps for mobile, options like Organic Maps (iOS/Android), OSMand (iOS/Android/Web), or HERE WeGo (iOS/Android) offer turn-by-turn navigation and downloadable offline maps for offline use.
