Snapchat is introducing its most significant update in years, simplifying its layout from five tabs down to three: one for chatting and viewing friends’ Stories, one for camera access, and the final one featuring a TikTok-like feed filled with full-screen videos from creators and publishers.
This redesign, called Simple Snapchat, was announced at Snap’s annual Partner Summit in Los Angeles on Tuesday. “We aim to bring Stories closer to conversations, streamline content discovery, and enable users to access the camera for self-expression instantly,” shared Snap CEO Evan Spiegel during a media session.
Previously, Snapchat’s five main sections included Snap Map, direct messages, the camera, and two variations of Stories and Spotlight. In the new format, Snap Map will now be part of the messaging section, alongside Stories from friends and followed users.
To the right of the camera view, users will find a new ‘For You’ area, showcasing Spotlight and content from various publishers such as The Wall Street Journal and Daily Mail. This phased rollout is expected to boost user interaction and help the company better track changes in user behavior over time.
Much of Snapchat’s revenue comes from advertisements paired with this content. As a result, the redesign is being implemented gradually so that “we can monitor any changes in content dynamics,” according to Spiegel.
The main aim of this update is to refresh Snapchat, making it more appealing and easier for video viewing—an area where users often turn to TikTok or Instagram. Spiegel believes this will support Snapchat’s content creators, who upload over a billion pieces of content monthly.
How Simple Snapchat Works
Camera First
Upon opening Snapchat, users are welcomed by the camera interface, allowing for quick Snap capturing and sharing.
All Conversations in One Place
The Chat tab is situated on the left, acting as a central hub for all chats. Stories are prominently featured at the top of this section, emphasizing the importance of sharing and engaging with Stories within conversations. Additionally, a button at the bottom offers easy access to Snap Map, easing the transition from chat to real-life meetups.
Personalized Content Just for You
Users will enjoy a revamped viewing experience on the right side, which merges Stories with Spotlight videos. This feature employs Snapchat’s first comprehensive recommendation algorithm, creating the most personalized experience to date. Videos shared by friends are prioritized, while recommendations are tailored based on users’ sharing habits, trending content in their circles, and their individual viewing history.
