Almost a decade has elapsed since Amazon initiated its delivery drone program, aiming to revolutionize the online shopping experience through rapid item transport. Recently, the company secured authorization from the FAA to launch flights from its new site in Arizona, as well as to execute beyond-line-of-sight (BLOS) operations with the new MK30 drone. Earlier this year, we covered the debut of the MK30 drone and the migration of the Amazon Prime Air service from California to Arizona.
The new drone features double the range of its predecessor, the MK27, and is said to operate at significantly reduced noise levels. With the BLOS approval, these delivery drones can now reach areas that are not directly observable from the warehouse, including the drone delivery facility. Previously, concerns had been voiced by some users regarding the noise generated by the MK27 drones, so it remains to be determined whether the MK30 will meet the expectations of the majority.
Regarding the kinds of packages eligible for delivery through this service, they are limited to a maximum weight of 2.27 kg (around 5 lbs), making it adequate for delivering medications and various other items where quick service is essential.
