3 Tips to Selling a Website

As a blogger, there will no doubt be a point when you feel you are ready to sell your website creation to the world and start a fresh with a new idea. I have been in that situation many times – sometimes I wished I didn’t sell the website after seeing how successful it become and other times I was glad to see a website go. Either way, it is important to understand how to correctly sell your website online to maximize how much money you make from it. After all, selling a website is a bit different to selling second hand items on eBay. For this reason, here are a few tips you can use to help you sell your website.

#1 Use Flippa

The first step to selling a website is to know where to sell it. I have found the best place to sell a website, by far, is Flippa. Flippa is the ‘eBay’ equivalent for websites, enabling website owners to sell their website to a huge range potential buyers.

Although getting your listing onto Flippa will set you back $9 (or more depending on what extra options you choose), the publicity your website will get from being on Flippa will make the cost of putting it on the site worthwhile.

#2 Set to Auction with No Reserve

When it comes to selling a website, it is completely understandable for website owners to be very scared that there 1+ year long project could sell for a dollar. Due to this, you will tend to find a lot of websites on Flippa have reserves associated to them or buy it now prices (of what the website owner wants to sell his website at for him or her to be happy for it to sell). However, doing this will significantly decrease your chances of selling your website:

  1. Nobody likes bidding on something with a reserve
  2. The investors may not look at you as being completely serious that you want to sell it, no matter what

For this reason, as much as it may pain you, sell your website at $1 starting price, on auction and with no reserve. This way you are telling the world that your website is going to sell no matter what and if you want to win it, you need to be the highest bidder. Flippa backs this point up and states also that websites without reserves have a much higher chance of selling for more too.

Be Honest in Your Description

There are many people out there that try to sell websites to make quick cash knowing fully well that the website is not worth spending a dime looking at. The problem is that there are many people out there trying to sell websites that are generally worth nothing. With this in mind, you will see many descriptions either ‘sugar coated’ to make the website seem amazing or descriptions where only limited information is supplied…almost as if the web user has decided to leave some information off possibly because knowing the truth may affect the website’s selling ability.

What is important to know is that by being as honest as possible in your description will make your website sell better. People do not want to invest in a website with unknowns associated to it. Therefore, the more information you put in the description, the more trust investors will have in you and your website and the more likely they are to bid onto it.
