Of course, it is impossible to factually state what is going to be the best smartphone of 2017 before it has Image result for iphone 8even been released. However, based on the previous releases from 2016 and rumours surrounding 2017 releases, we can at least have an educational guess as to what will wow us and what will not. Therefore, without further ado, here are some predictions for OEM smartphones in 2017.

  • Apple – 2017 is a very special year for the iPhone since it is going to be the 10th anniversay of the iPhone, which just makes you just realise how long the iPhone has been around! With this, the rumours that are circulating the internet are that Apple is really going to push the boat this year with something special with the iPhone. Will they even call it the iPhone 10 to signify the 10th aniversary? Who knows. But, we might see the home button ditched for a screen completely covering the whole front of the smartphone.
  • Samsung – The S7 and S7 Edge were huge hits in 2016, with their great design and features which made them compete easily with the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus. With 2017, we are expecting big things from Samsung too, with rumours circulating that the smartphone may remove the finger print sensor and embedd it into the actual touch screen and have edge to edge screens for both models. We should also expect to see a Note smartphone return too.
  • Google – 2016 was the first year that Google decided to stop the Nexus lineup and concentrate on making the smartphones themselves, both the software and the hardware. With this, the Pixel range was released. We can expect to see a Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL appear in 2017, with improvements to the Pixel, such as better hardware inside, smaller bezels around the screen, waterproof and wireless charging enabled.
  • LG – 2016 was not a kind year to LG, who decided to go down the approach of making a modular phone with the G5. However the modular phone was meant to attract the attention of 3rd parties to make modules for it, making an eco-system of modules for the G5. The problem was that not many 3rd parties did this so it was quite a huge flop for LG. With this, LG are left in a sticky situation whether they should just ditch the modules or continue this road. Either way, LG will struggle this year to regain any market share in the smartphone industry.
  • Motorola – Owned by Lenovo, Motorola was all about providing stock Android with great specs and cheap prices. 2016 was good for Motorola since they targeted the mid-range smartphone market. 2017 should not be any different. Therefore, we should expect to see Motorola improve the internals of their phones as well as shaving off a few millimetres here and there for their smarpthone lineups.
  • OnePlus – OnePlus have seemingly come out of nowhere to make a great mid-range smartphone with flagship qualities. The OnePlus 4 is expected to be released this year, and be very close to the OnePlus 3T in design with better internals inside. Therefore, we can expect OnePlus to have another solid year with the next iteration of their flagship phone.
