What to Expect from Laptops in 2017

If you look at a laptop from five years ago and one from this year, you will be reminded and staggered at just how much technology has improved. It is true to say that technology is improving and moving along at truly an exponential rate. With this in mind, here are some predictions for what we can all expect laptops to be like and features they will have in 2017.

#1 Edge to Edge Displays

First displayed on the Dell XPS 13 and 15 and labelled an ‘InfinityEdge’ display, as it states in the name, this is a screen for laptops which are, near enough, bezelless. What this enables are laptops which have much larger displays in a smaller overall form factor. For example, The Dell XPS 13 is a 13″ laptop in the spacing of a typical 11″ laptop.

We are definately going to see more and more laptops adopt smaller bezels in 2017 with the first being Lenovo who recently announced their new 910 Yoga which has a display on par to match the Dell XPS 13.

#2 New Intel Core Processors

The 7th generation of processors will dominate laptops in 2017 and are known as ‘Kaby Lake’. Therefore, expect another boost in performance for all laptops. This generally equates to a Skylake 6th Generation i7 processor having the same speed as the new Kaby Lake 7th Generation i5 (roughly).

#3 SSD as Standard

This is the case for most upper end laptops. However, for some middle to low buddget laptops, you will still find some of them adopting hard drives instead of solid state drives to keep the cost down. However, SSDs are very cheap now, usually around $100/500GB. Therefore, we can expect to see most, if not all, laptops use SSD from now on to aid in quicker start up times and faster transfer of files.

With this, most flagship laptops do not use SSD anymore but another form of SSD, labelled as PCIe SSD which are much quicker than SSD, sometimes by up to 5x.

#4 More Laptops with Touchscreen

Although Apple removed any links of them adopting touchscreens on their laptops with the introduction of the Touchbar, the Windows 10 software has been optimised for use of touchscreens. Therefore, with touchscreens becoming cheaper to purchase, we should expect to see more laptops use touchscreens to take advantage of the touchscreen friendly Windows 10 software.

#5 Thinner

Just like with most things in technology, things are constantly becoming thinner and thinner. For example, the HP Spectre has just come out and blown, pretty much, every laptop out of the market by how thin it is: even the Macbook Air! Therefore, we can see that thin laptops will still occur in 2017 due to the USP they bring with it.

Ultimately, 2017 is going to be a great year for technology considering the vast improvements we have made in 2016. With this, artificial intelligence will play a big role in 2017. For this reason, we should definately see Microsoft and Apple’s version of AI to compete against Google Assistant too.
