What Should Bloggers Do With Old Content?

There are many many areas and elements to becoming a successful blogger. Making a great website theme, creating unique, high quality content and monetizing the traffic without annoying visitors are just some of these elements. One area that seems to be constantly overshadowed when it comes to running and maintaining a website is what to do with old and already published content – once you publish an article, is that it? For most bloggers, they will think so. However, in order to maximize your website’s potential, modifying old content is key to keeping old content fresh and with the potential to continually bring in high magnitudes of traffic. Here are three things bloggers can do to rejuvenate old content.

First things first, it is important to prioritize what content you have published to edit first. If you have, like me, hundreds, if not thousands, of articles published online, choosing which ones to modify at first may seem a bit daunting. This is when you use quantifiable statistics to determine which needs updating first: views. Whichever articles have the most views get priority to modifications. If the article with the most views does not need modifying based on the below points, move to the next best and so on…

#1 Add ‘Updates’ to the End of Posts

Depending on when your articles were published and the types of comments those articles get determines if you should include an update or not. For example, if you have an article about a review of a product from 2015, it might be worth adding a 2016 update to the bottom of the article to explain to web users what has happened in between 2015 and 2016, or even point the web user to an article of the 2016 review. Either way, updates at the end of the post’s content are a great way to keep articles up to date without affecting the traffic or readability of the article in anyway.

#2 It May Need Proof Reading Again

For the articles that get the most traffic, it is defiantly worth proof reading at a much slower pace to make 100% make sure there is not a single typo or grammatical error/spelling in any part of the article. The articles that gain the most traffic on your site have the most influence to your website’s performance. Therefore, if they have typos, it will discourage the web user from clicking onto another article on your website or even discourage them from staying on your website at all. For this reason, it is best to be safe than sorry and proof read the most influential articles on your website again.

#3 Add Internal Links

If the article gains a lot of traffic, it is worth taking advantage of this and adding a few more internal links throughout your article, in an attempt to keep web users on your website for longer.

If you perform good search engine optimization already to your articles, you should have 1-2 links on your articles anyway. However, if you have an article that is getting  a lot of traffic that is 1000 words long with 1-2 links on it, it might be worth seeing if you can naturally add more links to 1) improve the SEO of the article and 2) increase the chances of a click onto another webpage on your website.
