So you have come up with a brilliant multimillion dollar idea and want to convert that idea into a website to profit from. You are so excited to get this idea under way but do not know where to start. When it comes to creating a website, the first step you always have to do is secure a domain. After all, there is no point in making the website and then try to buy your domain to find it is not available as it is being used by someone else. For this reason, always make sure you purchase your domain first before anything else when it comes to creating a website. As well as this tip, here are some other tips for when it comes to choosing your website’s domain name and buying it.

Keep it Short

The first and most crucial tip is to make sure that your domain name is short. The reason why you want to keep it short is because:

  • It is easier to type into web browsers if it short.
  • It is easier for web users to remember your domain name if it is short.
  • It is more recognisable and looks more premium – this is because the shorter a domain name generally is, the higher the price it costs to purchase it. Also, all of the best websites in the world have generally short domain names.

Only Use Letters

If you use anything other than letters, the first thought that comes to web user’s minds is that you did not get your first choice domain name. It is the same for Twitter usernames too. For this reason, always make sure you use letters only (so that means do not use numbers and punctuation such as hyphens etc.).

This does bring around the problem when you do not get your first choice domain name. If that is the case, brainstorm some keywords and ideas around your website and come up with a different short domain name that has not been taken yet.

Best To Stick With .com

Unless you know you are targeting a certain demographic and you know only that demographic area will view your website/domain, it is best to stick with buying a .com domain name. The general rule with the ending of the domain name for me is to:

  1. Buy the domain name with .com
  2. Once the website is up and running and generating around 20,000 visitors a month, analyse where the traffic is coming from.
  3. Based on the traffic, buy domain names with other demographic areas such as .co.uk, .org or .net and then use these domains only to forward traffic to the .com variation.
