Remove Your PS3 Hard Drive and Put In A Whopper

Modern day consoles serve as more then just gaming platforms. Features such as the ability to browse the web and play back media are now commonplace. Sony’s Playstation 3 not only features a full fledged Blu Ray Player and an online store, it offers something else that is less commonly known: the ability to upgrade your PS3 hard drive.

Every version of the PS3, be it the original model or the new slim, contains an easily accessible 2.5” hard drive, the same standard SATA model found in current laptops. Sony intentionally designed the PS3 to allow users to remove the original hard drive and add their own after market drive.

This is good for many reasons. Notably, it allows for the kind of space required to rip and transfer an entire movie collection onto a PS3, where they can be played directly. No more rummaging around for DVDs.

Additionally, the PS3 offers some of the best upscaling algorithms out there. Standard definition content looks remarkably crisp, with better presentation then the vast majority of DVD players. In addition, the PS3 offers fantastic video playback control. With the press of a button users can display a navigation bar with 15, second, 30 second, 1, 2, and 5 minute intervals (controlled with up and down), each with a live preview.

If you’re looking for the most fully featured PS3 to date, look for the first generation 60GB model (which can be identified by looking for the sku ‘CECHAxx’). While most models contain at least one of these features, no other model combines 802.11 wireless, flash card readers, and full hardware backwards compatibility for PS2 games. Some of these features might not matter to many, of course. In that case, a sleek, new, inexpensive Slim PS3 is the way to go.
