Do you have an external hard drive plugged in? A new printer of some sort? Any other new hardware? I’ve run into issues with those printers that have the flash (SD, MicroSD, Compact Flash, Memory Stick, etc) card readers every so often interfering with the boot process.

Try unplugging all of your USB peripherals (except for your mouse and keyboard, of course) and attempt to boot. If your computer starts up fine, then start to plug them back in one at a time until you run into the culprit.

If that’s not the issue, then make sure that your RAM is seated well, sometimes it’ll get rattled a bit loose if the machine has been moved around.

There is always the possibility that your hard drive is going bad as well. It only takes a few corrupted sectors on critical system files to hose the machine. If that’s the case then you’ll need to have the PC boot from a CD that has a hard drive diagnostic utility on it and scan that mofo for errors. The Ultimate Boot CD has a hard disk diagnostic utility on it.

Im having a problem with my pc in that as soon as i turn it on it freezes and wont respond to anything. Before it did this i was having some internet trouble. Something about unavailable ports. Anybody got any ideas on what my problem might be?

Hey guys, i was once suffering from the same problem as an external hard drive or as such being plugged in was stopping my start up.

But NOW, i have the problem of my computer once turned on not staying on for more then 5minutes. Ive cleaned the hardware of dust and filters, but am unable to clean the software due to the fact that i dont have enough time before it shuts down, and when it crashes ahrd as if someone unplugs the power cord. Need help, im in fear on a format.

Hi, Glad I found your board. I’m sort of having the same problem. When I plug my printer up or my camera my computer freezes up and will not shut down or restart. I have to take the battery out and then restart it to unlock it. I have reinstalled everything and the same thing keeps happening. I also have to leave the notebook unplugged, turn it on then plug it up or it won’t start? I have to use my printer and camera for my business so this is causing me major problems. Any ideas what is wrong, and if I can fix it myself. I havent taken it to the shop because I literally have to have my computer every day for work.

my computer started locking up and i decided that it was the hard drive, which was replaced windows 98 was reloaded and then it goes to start up and gets to the hardware found prompt for the monitor and then it freezes. nothing works mouse, keyboard, ctrl-alt-del nothing. I recycle power and it starts again and freezes in the same spot each time. could my video card be ruined? i can start the computer in safe mode and everything works so i think the hard drive is okay. keyboard works,as does the mouse.. stumped…

Thank you!!! My computer started to not boot too and then I unplugged my HP PSC 1315 printer and now it turns on! I can plug my printer in when the computer is on and usually it works for a while before I have to unplug it again. Thanks!!!

My computer had freezed the last couple of days and I read this and noticed my ipod was plugged in unplugged it and my computer works fine now :)
