Can I repair XP SP2 with a XP (no service pack) disc?
Name: Aaron Henderson
Hi tweeks, I want to repair my friends computer and he’s running XP home with service pack2. But I only have an old XP home disc, so can I repair his install with my old disk?
Thanks, Aaron
Like it is, no.
However, you can use your SP0 disk to MAKE an SP2 CD. You’ll need to slipstream Service Pack 2 into your XP disk files, and then burn a new disk.
The instructions on how to integrate Service Pack numero dos are in the article linked to above. The main time-consuming part is going to be downloading the redistributable of the SP2 installer. It’s fairly large. (I certianly hope you have broadband :) )

If the repair doesn’t work from the updated slipstreamed CD-ROM, you might want to consider creating a BartPE CD-ROM to boot the computer up and at least access the local files on the hard disk/s to get the data on them copied off before any attempt is made to reinstall XP.
Just my tuppence worth… :-)
