For the vast majority of websites, the number one way they will making money from the traffic they generate will be Image result for adsense making moneythrough Google’s PPC program Adsense. However, you will generally find website owner’s wanting to optimise and find new ways to improve the adverts from Adsense on their website so that they can earn even more and more revenue – already on TweaksForGeeks.com, there are lots of articles about Adsense and how to increase Adsense earnings. But, if you feel you have done every trick and you are still not making enough money from Adsense you may feel like you cannot do anymore – fear not, my friend. Here are some reasons why you may not be making money with Adsense.

What’s ‘Not Making Money With Adsense’?

Before we truly get into the article, we need to understand whether what you are making with Adsense is good or bad. Here is a quick run down of RPM values for Adsense publishers which will determine whether you are making enough/not enough:

  • ~$1 / 1,000 impressions – this is about the norm for Adsense.
  • Under $1 / 1,000 impressions – this is not good and needs addressing
  • Over $1 / 1000 impressions – keep it up, you are doing better than the average!

Therefore, if your RPM is below $1, here are some potential reasons why which you may have not thought about.

For this article, I am assuming that all of the optimisation tips regarding ad size, type, colour combination, location and more has been performed.

#1 Your Website’s Quality

Your website might be bringing in thousands of impressions. However, if Google and advertisers do not feel it is a ‘good’ website, your RPM will be low.

This is the case with many websites that gain traffic through social media, such as the articles that have titles, for example, such as ‘5 Celebrities Who Turned Bankrupt Overnight’. Although these ‘click bait’ websites get lots of traffic, this does not always mean the quality of the articles or the website, in general, is high – this is reflected in the RPM as advertisers will pay a lower CPC for their advert to show on such websites.

#2 Your Website is a Niche

Niche websites are great because they bring a huge amount of specifically targeted traffic to them. The quality of the website could be great which rules out the above point for you not making enough money with Adsense. However, the problem with niche websites is that, well, they are niche. The content on a website, to some extent, determines the type of adverts that appear on it from Adsense. If the content is about sports cars, you will see adverts contextually targeted to sports cars.

However, if your website is hitting a really small niche, such as something obscure like learning how to add nutrients to soil for gardening, then you should not be surprised that the amount of advertisers wanting to show adverts to such a niche is low. With the old ‘supply and demand’ saying, the demand is low while the supply is there on the niche website. For this reason, competition is low reducing the CPC advertisers have to pay.
