Laptop Battery

What could have happened with your laptop battery is simply that it was insufficiently charged. A battery will get what’s known as a “surface charge” where it reads as fully powered up, when in fact it is not.

We have an HP Pavilion laptop, about 2 yrs old. We just replaced the battery, charged it up and it worked fine. Then we left it on the counter, unplugged, and when we tried to power it up today it was dead. Plugged it in and it is fine and the battery is charging. What would cause the battery to drain like that? Do I need to take it to the repair shop? Thanks

Brand new batteries have to be charged for much longer than their pre-used counterparts. Almost all new electronics that I buy force me to charge it the first time for at least 8 hours, often for more than 12.

Watch your cell phone, it’ll often read as done charging after 20 min (at least mine does), when it still needs considerably more time.

It’s also possible that something in the laptop was still drawing power. If the laptop was only in suspend, and not actually turned off, it is still drawing power.
