Is The LG G Flex 2 Actually A Good Smartphone?

I recently made an article which addressed some of the issues that has been associated with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 810 chip. If you want to save yourself a bit of time from reading the article, basically, the chip overheats far too easier causing thermal throttling to kick in resulting in the chip losing performance too easily and the phone overheating. This might be why a lot of the main manufacturers of smartphones have gone back to using the 808 chip as, on average, the 808 chip performs better than the 810 (even if it does have less power). When the 810 came out, the first phone to feature it was the LG G Flex 2. However, even with the 810 problems, is the LG G Flex 2 actually a good smartphone still and potentially good enough to be a flagship market leader? Let’s find out.

To determine the answer to this question, I will be looking into some key areas being performance, screen, design, battery and features.

  • Performance – Even with the problems of the 810 overheating, on the whole, the G Flex 2 does quite well actually. What most people do not understand is that the G Flex 2 only overheats with intense use (more than 20 minutes on screen time). For most people, they will only use their phone ten minutes at a time. Therefore, if you are like me and do this, you will hardly ever see any overheating occurring which means the blazing fast power of the 810 is fully used at all times.
  • Screen – What makes this phone good as well is the fact the screen is a 1080p full HD screen. Any more pixel density than full HD and the battery and performance to power an Ultra HD screen may start to take its toll. Therefore, although it could be crispier, the screen at its currently pixel density gets a good blend of quality to battery life and performance saving.
  • Design – The stand out point to this phone. The design is great. It fits right into your hand and your pocket too. But, what I have notcied more than anything is that the screen looks stunning with the curve and is durable too since it can flex. I cannot count the amount of times I have had people staring at the LG G Flex 2 on the street because of the curve!
  • Battery – Like with most phones nowadays, the G Flex 2 achieves a standard one day of battery and has support for Qualcomm quick charging. The main disappointment, though, is the fact that this phone does not support wireless charging (although there are adaptors that can support this).
  • Features – Apart from the lack of wireless charging, this phone has everything. NFC, laser autofocus camera, micro SD card slot and the IR blaster are just some of the things this phone has.

Should you get it? I think so. There are software updates which enable the 810 chip to not thermal throttle as much as it should (which should increase performance) and if you want a phone that really does stand out, there is no better option (maybe other than the S6 Edge)!
