So you are at the stage where you feel you are ready to start your own website or blog. At this stage Image result for How to Name a Website or Blogthough, you might not know it but you will have to make an extremely crucial decision that will affect your website’s success for years to come. Yes, I am talking about your website’s name.

But, choosing a website name is notoriously difficult. I remember for a few of my websites that it took a good week or so to come up with a good name for them – the problem is that once you have chosen, you need to stick by it come rain come shine.

In general, there are two different roads you can go down to picking your a website name which is good:

  1. Fill it with keywords. In terms of search engine optimisation, having a website name with keywords will work towards improving your website’s ranking organically. As well as this, it is easier for the web user to digest the website name and understand what the website is about. Therefore, not only does it help organically, it will also help new visitors too.
  2. Choose a unique name. Since the name you would have chosen is unique, it will have no significant benefit to the SEO of your website, since it is completely unrelated to everything online. However, from using a unique name you will have created a brand image, which will be effective for two reasons:
    1. Web users are more likely to remember your brand name for your website if it is unique and will return to your website when they need to.
    2. A unique brand name, when Google searched, will have next to nothing in terms of competition. Therefore, when web users are searching for your brand name, you will not have to worry about fending off competition at all.

Ultimately, it really does depend on the type of website you are creating which will dictate what type of brand name you should go for. If you want to create a brand, it is an absolute no brainer to pick a unique word that you will one day build into a brand. Whereas, on the other hand, if you are interested into making a content mill (a website dedicated to publishing content to generate traffic from), it would be far more effective to make a domain that describes what your website is simply about so that your domain name will contribute to the overall organic health of your website on search engines.

Whatever option you go for, it is important to note that the shorter the name, the better. This is because it is generally better in terms of SEO and is easier for the web user to remember.
