[How to] Exercise A Electronic Device Battery

Unfortunately, batteries do not live forever. After time, the life of the battery will keep on decreasing until that horrible moment, for laptops, when you have to plug your laptop in whenever you use it out of fear of your laptop dying without the charger being plugged in. Yes, it sucks. But, it is not the end of the world! There are many techniques you can use to exercise and prolong the life of your electronic battery’s life that I will outline in this article so that you can enjoy long lasting batteries for longer.

#1 Do Not Drain A Battery Completely

Completely draining a lithium ion (most common type of battery used in electronic devices) is bad for the battery’s performance since it can often damage and weaken the battery. For this reason, it is far better to let the battery run down to around 5-10% and then charge it instead of letting it die completely and then charging it.

If you do let the battery die completely, do not worry! A few times will not cause it too much harm. However, continued draining of the battery to nothing will weaken it in the long run.

#2 Keep Your Battery Cool

Heat destroys batteries too. A great example of this is when I went on holiday to Florida from living in England. In England, my LG G Flex can get around a day and a half of use from one battery charge. In Florida, when the temperature was 30+ degrees Celsius, I struggled to get 8 hours of use and had to charge it continually through the day so I was not left at 7pm with a dead phone! Heat breaks down the process of how a battery works so making sure your battery is as cool as possible at all times will prolong its life. For laptops, making sure the air vents are free the laptop is cool is key.

#3 Don’t Leave Your Device Plugged In Charging 24/7

Although it is bad to ‘exercise’ your battery down to 0%, it is even worse if you left the battery charged in 24/7 so that it never went below 100%. Therefore, make sure you exercise the battery by charging it to 100% and letting it drain naturally to around 10% <– this is the best way to prolong the life of your battery.

Of course, you could always replace your laptop or phone’s battery (if it has a removable battery). However, why should you do this when you can be tech savy and save money by learning the right way to using a battery!

At the end of the day, treat a battery like you would treat, say, an athlete. You cannot expect the athlete to run constantly without being fueled with food and rest (and it is probably the last 10% of a marathon that hurts the most for him and his muscles)!
