How Do You Start a Career In Blogging?

Every blogger has been there – at the start of their career where they have made the decision that they want to progress with blogging. However, for the majority of people starting out in blogging, they probably do not have a single clue where exactly to start. The truth is that every blogger, if you speak to them, will have a different and interesting story about how they got into blogging. Based on my experience and talking to many bloggers, here are a few things you can do to help you kick start a career in blogging.

#1 Create a Website

The best way to start blogging is to learn about blogging yourself through starting a website. The chances are that you will not know much about Search Engine Optimization (SEO), blogging tips and tricks, how Blogger or WordPress works and more. Therefore, learn by creating your own website and use that website as your CV when it comes to applying for actual blogging positions.

#2 Work For Free

By far the best way to progress in freelance work is to offer your services for free. Yes, of course it will not be financially sustainable. However, once you have settled down to how blogging works etc. you can then start looking at other freelance work and offering a rate for them: likewise potentially with who you were doing freelance work for free.

I recently started up a website and made an advert to hire freelancers to work for me. I had many entries to whom I accepted and declined. When someone offers me their services for free, it is extremely hard to decline as I am not going to lose anything financially from accepting them onto the team of freelancers?

#3 First Impressions Are Everything

When you have learned how to blog and have some experience that would be worthy enough to hire you upon, you can start applying for actual positions. Generally, the best place to look is Problogger Job board, where there are hundreds of adverts all for freelancers.

Apply for as many as possible, making sure to do the following with each:

  • Have good grammar and vocabulary – nobody is going to hire you if you are making typos in the email that is applying for the freelance position.
  • Don’t spam – It is common for freelancers to create a temple email and send it every time they see an interesting position, changing only the subject of the email. Employers can tell this and do not appreciate it! Always make your application specific to the job you are applying for.
  • Show enthusiasm – Above everything, employers want people that are going to be motivated and enjoy the freelance work as they feel they would be getting the most out of you if you feel this way towards the freelance position.
