Is this the future Apple Smartwatch?

Rumors of an Apple Smartwatch, or sometimes referred as the Apple iTime or Apple iWatch, have been circulating for years.  Now, recently released patent details have added fuel to the fire.  A patent dated from 2011 at least proves that Apple was considering marketing a smartwatch in the future. The patent provided some information regarding the iWatch, including the image appended in this article.

The patent, illustration, and recent Apple business decisions have provided us enough information to deduce some basic functions of this future Apple wearable.

The patent disclosed that notifications received from the iWatch can be controlled by motions of the hand or arm.  For example, a shake of the arm can dismiss a call or another movement can activate it.  The possibilities are endless, but I do hope the motions can be unique and to the preference of the wearer.

The Apple iWatch is expected to track your health and fitness levels.  This is fairly standard on most smartwatches and newer phones.  According to 9to5mac, the iWatch may also utilize the Healthbook app to allow the wearers to monitor their blood pressure, hydration levels, heart rate, and possibly even their glucose levels and other health related checks.  The article further suggests that the wearer can input prescription related details so the iWatch can set up medication reminders.

We have also learned that Apple has hired some heavy hitters in the health and fitness industry, including former Senseonics vice president Dr. Todd Whitehurst and former Nike advisor Jay Blahnik.

Other reports have also stated that the Apple smartwatch will be heavily dependent on the smartphone.  This is also expected, and a similar reliance exists between the Samsung Gear 2 and the Galaxy.  Eventually, I am sure this reliance will become minimal to total independence.

What I do hope is that the diagram shown above is not what the final product will look like.  I am aware that the illustration above is 2011 technology, so there is some hope that it has changed.  The main reason is the strap.  The strap clearly shows a sensor or component on each of the wristbands.  What this means for the wearer is that they are stuck with that wristband and if it breaks so does the smartwatch.  Samsung learned their lesson in putting components on their wristband and that’s one of the great things about the Samsung Gear 2.  I can put whatever wristband I want on the Gear 2 and it will still operate without issues.

Hopefully, we will soon learn more about the fabled Apple smartwatch.  As for now we can only speculate.
