Marketing a business online is drastically different than marketing one through more traditional methods. One thing both strategies have in common, though, is that there seems to be a fine line between marketing too aggressively and being too passive about things. If anything, though, the “hard sell” approach doesn’t fly on the Internet. At the same time, though, strictly sticking with a static website that only provides basic information about your business is a mistake. Aggressive Internet marketing techniques have their advantages, and no marketing strategy is complete – or effective – without them.

Quiz: How Aggressively Do You Market Your Company Online?

Chances are you’re not quite sure how aggressive your Internet marketing techniques are in the first place. Take this brief quiz to get a feel:

  • Do you post testimonials on your site to demonstrate the quality of your products and services?
  • Do you have a 12-month business plan outlining your goals for the next year?
  • Do you check in monthly with qualified prospects to share ideas and/or solutions?
  • Are you working to grow your list of qualified prospects by at least 5 percent per month?
  • Do you immediately follow up with prospects and then follow up at least six more times?
  • In your marketing materials, is the first element a one-sentence run-down of how your business can help?
  • When you post a free offer, do hundreds of people contact you?
  • Do you spend at least the first half of all marketing materials highlighting prospects’ pain points and explaining how your products and services can help?
  • Have you created a written marketing plan that dictates your marketing activities for the next day, week and month?
  • Do you regularly offer freebies to encourage prospects to contact your business?

Add up the number of “yes” answers you’ve provided. The higher your score is, the more aggressive your online marketing efforts are. If you only answered “yes” three or fewer times, though, there’s no way you’re coming close to achieving the kinds of results you deserve.

Top Ways to Kick Your Marketing Efforts Up a Notch

Even if you scored high on the preceding quiz, odds are that you could stand to be a little more aggressive about your Internet marketing. The questions above provide many great clues into being a more aggressive Internet marketer. Following up regularly with prospects, offering freebies to encourage interaction and having a clear marketing plan in writing are all prime examples of things you can do to bolster your online marketing efforts. A few additional tips include:

Be Accessible via Mobile – If you don’t have a mobile friendly presence yet, it’s time to change that. Rather than having a separate mobile site developed, though, consider upgrading yours to have a responsive design. This means it will render correctly across all devices using a single set of code.

Less is More – Don’t cram too much information onto a single landing page or otherwise overwhelm prospects with too many images or other elements. Doing that is a prime example of being too aggressive.

Content is King – More than ever, it’s crucial to regularly post and share relevant, informative, high-quality content. Doing so helps to establish your company as an authority and as a trusted source of high-quality products and services.

Show It – Text-based marketing isn’t going away, but people respond favorably to visual stimuli as well. With that in mind, periodically create and share infographics and other compelling images to appeal to prospects visually as well.

SEO and Social Signals – Whether you’re talking about Facebook likes or Google+ plus-ones, social signals have become crucial parts of any successful SEO campaign. It’s well worth it to pour lots of energy into establishing great social media profiles in order to develop positive social signals from a variety of sources.

As you can see, these techniques aren’t necessarily bold or brash. They’re still highly proactive, though, and that’s what the best aggressive Internet marketing techniques are all about. With time, striking the right balance will become easier and easier. For now, focus on implementing the preceding techniques, and then see how it goes.
