3 Mistakes I Made When I First Started Blogging

No matter what career path you have taken, you will know that one of the best ways to progress yourself is to learn from your mistakes. However, what if you have not made any mistakes up to now or just starting out your career? In these situations, it is a good idea to look at the mistakes other people made in your situation and learn from them instead. This is exactly the objective of this article. I started blogging over five years ago and, trust me, I made many mistakes. Therefore, to help prevent others from following the same tough path I followed, here are three mistakes I made when I first started blogging.

#1 I Tinkered With My Design Constantly

The biggest pet hate I had when I first started blogging was the fact that I never stopped tinkering with my website’s design: with the idea that I could always find a way to write a bit of code to improve the functionality of the website etc.

However, by doing this, a lot of my time when I started out blogging was dedicated to tinkering with a design where it really should have been dedicated to making unique and great quality content. If I didn’t make any content at all and just tinkered with the design of my website, how on earth would it progress at all?

For this reason, choose a design and stick with it. Set a date to freeze the design and look of your website so that you can concentrate on more important matters such as content generation.

#2 My Website Was Not a Niche Website

When you come up with an idea for a website, you might think it is a great idea. However, it is critical to the success of your website to make sure the competition for such a website is low: otherwise, your website will be comparable as a shark is to a goldfish.

The best and most successful websites out there hit niche topics which have not been generally covered online. For example, my first website featured tech updates from all things Apple, just because I was a fan of Apple – little did I know there are hundreds of high ranked websites that do exactly the same thing I was planning to do but better! Making sure your website has a good scope to provide niche content with little competition from other websites is key to the success of it.

#3 I Chose Quantity and Not Quality

When I first started blogging, I felt I was in a hurry to stick as much content onto it as possible. This was because I had just started blogging and created a website and not a single article on it to show for anything. I am sure for most website creators, they will feel similar pressure to pump as much content onto it as possible.

However, in doing this will not benefit your website in any way. I forgot to proof read articles so they were littered with errors and typos and the content was pretty appalling to read regardless. Therefore, those that did read the articles never returned to my website as they were scarred for life from reading such poor content. As well as this, the search engines did not value it as worthy enough to rank on even the tenth page of search engine results. Therefore, when you do write content, make sure it is of your highest quality always before you publish it online.
