3 Areas Smartwatches Can Still Improve

In essence, there are far more areas that smartwatches can improve in since they are a relatively new type of technology and have not been innovated upon like the smartphone. Putting this aside though, I do feel there are some key areas smartwatches need to improve in order to gain more publicity and to get more people using them. Therefore, without further ado, here are the main three areas I feel smartwatches can still improve in to make them really a gadget that everyone and anyone can (and will) wear.

#1 Battery

I tend to find that even without my Sony Smartwatch 3, I have two devices that need charging every night: my tablet and my phone. Thankfully, the Sony Smartwatch 3 battery can last me a good two days so it is not too much of a problem. However, for the majority of smartwatches out there, their battery will only last a day. To have so many devices that need charging every night – people just do not want that! The next smart watch to be released with, let’s say, 3-5 day battery will take the market by a storm because battery, to some people, it extremely important.

#2 Design

Possibly considered the biggest area smartwatches need to improve, the design is still not like a watch. This is why I hate the Sony Smartwatch 3. For sport, it is great but I cannot wear it on any formal occasions like the Moto 360, G Watch R or Apple Watch.

To really become popular, Smartwatches need to look exactly like a normal watch. To do this they need to:

  • Reduce in thickness. Smartwatches are still a little chunky which makes them look more like a Casio G Shock than a Rolex.
  • Have an always on OLED screen. For smartwatches, the future is in OLED because only the pixels in use need power (and for the rest of the screen, they are not used saving battery). The Moto 360 is the best looking smartwatch out there. However, you cannot see any watch face because it has an LCD screen. By having an OLED will help make the smartwatch look like a watch 24/7 and not just when you flick your wrist up.

#3 Apps

It is true that Google and Apple have a platform or developers to build apps for smartwatches. The problem I have found, though, is that developers are simply not taking advantage of smartwatches enough in the apps. Some apps will require the use of a smartphone. But, not every single app. Some apps could work alone on the smartwatch and could work better alone on the smartwatch. For example, to use Shazam, I have to have the app open on my phone to use it on my smartwatch – that just seems silly!
